THE KKK IN MAINE

When I think of the Ku Klux Klan, I think of the South, not Maine. I have recently learned that Maine, with 150,000 members in 1920, possessed the largest, most active Ku Klux Klan membership outside of the South. Rather than targeting African Americans, Maine Ku Klux Klan members targeted Franco-Americans.

What stirred my interest in this topic was a large roster of Klan members from Kennebunk that was found in the attic of Dan Boothby’s house on High Street. Until Dan showed me the document, dated 1925, with fifteen local residents’ names on it, I had no idea of the KKK history in Maine.
